A left handed catchers mitt is a rare piece of equipment on a professional baseball field, but not on a little league diamond. One of the most noticeable aspects of the game is the limited positions for left handed players. This is especially true at the major league level. Infielders on the left side of the field are predominantly right handed. This is because it is easier and quicker to throw to first base with the right hand. Plus, they often catch the ball going to their right. Thus, a fielder will be able to plant their back foot when catching the ball before throwing. That is not the case for catchers using a left handed catchers mitt. Conversely, this does not always apply for first basemen,. They are in close proximity to first when catching a grounder. And, this problem never applies to outfielders who can position themselves before making any play, including getting a running start. However, even though pro catchers have the same problem as infielders, a left handed catchers mitt can be a real advantage on many youth league teams.
